Reliable and Efficient Multi-rate Aware Reactive (REMAR) routing for IEEE 802.11 based MANET

Most existing mobile ad hoc network (MANET) routing protocols use the minimum number of hops as a routing metric. These paths tend to contain long range links that may degrade both throughput and reliability. Higher throughput can be achieved by using short but effective links. The main problem with existing protocols is that they use only receiver signal strength indicator (RSSI) value to assess the link states. In realistic networks, RSSI value is not always accurate measure of link capacity hence using it can result in inaccurate decisions which will degrade the reliability of paths. We propose Reliable and Efficient Multi-rate Aware Reactive (REMAR) routing protocol for MANET. REMAR does not make routing decisions based on RSSI value hence provides more reliable paths. REMAR also decreases the overhead caused by periodic hello messages in other protocols. The proposed protocol reacts effectively to changes in link states thus making it more efficient than other protocols. Simulation results show that our proposed protocol can increase the throughput by 157% and decrease the network delay by 44%.
