If you don't know what's happening on your networks, you're always going to be way behind the curve when it comes to attacks. As good as your perimeter defences may be, sometime (probably soon) an attacker is going to slip past them. Or maybe an attack will originate from within. You need to be able to spot the signs and know what to do about them.
