Real-Time Scheduling Support for Multimedia Communication

Hans Kristian Fjeld · NORA - Norwegian Open Research Archives · 2001

Distributed multimedia applications have Quality of Service (QoS) requirements that current communication systems are not able to handle. Dynamic Configuration of Protocols (Da CaPo) is a framework for dynamically configurable lightweight communication protocols. Da CaPo is still being developed, and one way to continue that development is to make it take advantage of real-time scheduling in an Operating System (OS) that supports this. Real-Time Linux (RTLinux) is a variant of the Linux OS that offers hard real-time capabilities, while still retaining all the features of Linux. The goal of this thesis is to improve Da CaPo by utilizing the superior resource management in RTLinux. A design for a multi-threaded Da CaPo for RTLinux is presented. The design includes selected parts of the Da CaPo framework, and identifies and solves problems related to RTLinux. The design has been partly implemented and informally verified. The thesis shows that RTLinux is a suitable platform for a real-time enabled version of Da CaPo.
