Key Distribution and Authentication Protocol for Secure Wireless Conferencing

Rahul Jain · IETE Technical Review · 1998

Wireless communication networks would be increasingly used for mobile computing and conferencing applications, besides personal one-to-one communications. Such applications involve slightly different types of issues, particularly related to security and access. While several protocols have been proposed for key distribution and authentication for secure wireless conferencing, the literature on this topic lacks the clarity necessary for implementation in real systems. In this work, we propose a key distribution and authentication protocol for secure wireless conferencing that particularly takes care of the issues involved in practical implementation, particularly in cellular networks. It is based on the Modular Square Root (MSR) technique, that has been shown to be more secure than the RSA scheme. Assymetry in computational complexity between the portable unit and the network centre is taken care of in this protocol.
