Hovering and Jumping: Contrasting Problems in Scaling

Robert McNeill Alexander · 2000

Abstract Evolution is a powerful, optimizing process that tends to form animals and plants to designs that are, for them, close to the best possible. When similar organisms evolve a range of sizes, evolution will tend to scale them so that each has a near-optimal design for its particular size. Scaling problems are problems of optimization over a range of sizes.
