This work shows that the impact of the duration of the simulation on a Wireless Ad-Hoc network is statistically significant and must be taken into consideration, when comparing the performance results for three well-known routing protocols with the Network Simulator-2. This comparison results can especially be affected when routing behaviours are examined and evaluated. Much previous work has been done on evaluating the performance of OLSR versus AODV and DSDV in terms of throughput, end-to-end delay, packet loss and routing overhead. The paper utilizes all these metrics but also simulates the scenarios under different duration times. Hence, the contribution is twofold. A heavily-loaded wireless environment is simulated with a wide range of number of nodes and extract specific results for the aforementioned routing protocols. Then a verification of whether these initial results depend on the duration of the simulation scenarios, is attempted. Indeed, we notice that the measured performance is affected by the time duration, both quantitatively and qualitatively.
