Effectiveness of passwords

Even this analogy breaks down to a certain extent as, with a telephone, once a communications path is opened by one party, the cal lee needs do nothing except talk. On the Internet, it is more as if caller C wants to talk to receiver R, then C must send a message to R, R responds by sending a separate and independent message back to C, who then responds with another complete message back to R etc. In this way even if the paths used are destroyed following each transmission, the packets still go through. This was deliberate.
