Scope and method of study. With the increase of the bandwidth and the number of users multiplexed on the same virtual network, the variety of services and their performances is growing. Frame Relay is one of the rapidly expanding services offering virtual networks with bursty bandwidth. This thesis provides a model to analyze Frame Relay delay/loss performances. A Frame Relay node is represented by two queues in tandem, an input queue and an output queue. The delay is calculated as the sum of the delays experienced at the input and the output queue. The blocking probability is calculated as a function of the buffer size of the networks queues. Findings and conclusions. The developed model was based on the user view of the network and the results were consistent with simulation model of a simplified Frame Relay network based on the provider view of the network. It was shown that the model can be potentially used to assess the performance of Frame Relay services with different subscription policies. Comparison between services with bursty bandwidth and fixed bandwidth channels showed that bursty channels provide better delays and blocking probability and can support sources with more bursty traffic.
