Abstract — In the last decade medical image processing is immerged as one of the major area of research. In medical science, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a very popular technique used in Radiology for analyzing internal structures in details. MRI provides good contrast between the different soft tissues of the body, which makes it especially useful in imaging the different internal organs like brain, heart, kidney etc. MRI image segmentation and edge detection plays vital roles in medical teaching, training and research. Segmentation accuracy determines the success or failure of computerized analysis procedure. This paper presents a robust procedure for segmentation and edge detection of MRI images based on marker controlled watershed algorithm. The efficiency and accuracy of the algorithm is demonstrated by the experiments on the MRI brain images. Experimental results presented in this paper are obtained by using MATLAB.
