Professional Certification and Training in Information Assurance
Michel E. Kabay, Christopher Christian, Kevin Henry, Sondra Schneider · 2012
This chapter outlines benefits of professional certifications and commercial training programs. It presents a summary of some of the key security-related certifications including basic, intermediate, advanced, forensics, anti-hacking, and specialized certificate programs. The chapter also discusses the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) certification that is offered by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. CFE demonstrates ability to detect financial fraud and other white-collar crimes. This credential is of primary interest to full-time security professionals in law or law enforcement, or those who work in organizations with legal mandates to audit for possible fraudulent or illegal transactions and activities. Certified Protection Professional (CPP) program from nonprofit American Society for Industrial Security International demonstrates a thorough understanding of physical, human, and information-security principles and practices. The CPP requires extensive on-the-job experience (nine years or seven years with a college degree) including “at least three of those years in responsible charge of a security function,” as well as a profound knowledge of technical and procedural security topics and technologies—not just information technology security.
