The problem of expressing precisely the similarities between assemblages by the percentage ratio of various types of materials found can be solved by various techniques. In the American archeological literature, the Brainerd-Robinson method (1), which Driver (2) deservedly has termed "the most elegant," has been particularly well developed. This statistical procedure is called seriation or stratification.
