Experiences With Software Inspections - A Case Study

James A. White · WIT transactions on information and communication technologies · 1970

In recent years many claims have been made for Software Inspections, including the ability to increase the quality of delivered products, and increase the productivity of the software development process. This paper discusses the use of Software Inspections in a commercial software development environment. In particular, it considers the motivations for using inspections, the practical aspects of introducing the technique, and the results obtained. Both quantitative and qualitative results are considered. This is a real life case study, based on the experiences of a single division within Hewlett-Packard, showing both the difficulties and barriers to be overcome in introducing inspections, and the benefits to be gained. It shows that inspections can be up to 8 times more efficient at finding defects than dynamic testing, and that inspections can provide a return on investment both before and after product release.
