EFL phraseological development: Insights from learner corpora

Magali Paquot · Digital Access to Libraries · 2016

This presentation will review recent research on EFL phraseological development conducted at the Centre for English Corpus Linguistics (University of Louvain, Belgium). To assess whether and to what extent the word combinations used by learners are ‘native-like’, we have adopted a method that consists of assigning to each pair of words in a learner text an association score computed on the basis of a large reference corpus (i.e. statistical collocations). The opportunities offered by this method to discriminate proficiency levels and trace phraseological development will be discussed.
