ac impedance methods are widely used to characterize components and materials. However, the complexity and costliness of those bench-top impedance measurement instruments available on the market make them inadequate for industrial automation applications requiring easy operation and low cost. This paper presents the design and implementation of a compact and practical impedance analyzer using equivalent-time sampling and digital phase-sensitive detection techniques. The technical details of the system including auto-balancing bridge, synchronized signal generator, and digital lock-in amplifier are introduced. The results show that the finished set-up achieves an up-to-date performance and surpasses other similar products in portability and extendibility. The actual application demonstrates that this system provides a feasible solution for precision impedance measurements.
