To su pp ort and encourage scientific research on bio dive rsity and ecosystem fu n ctio n in g , Europe launched LifeWatch w ith in the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI).LifeWatch fu nctio ns as a central virtua l laboratory, integrating observatories, databases, web services and m odelling to ols d istrib u te d th ro u g h o u t Europe.As part o f the Flemish co n trib u tio n s to LifeWatch, the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) set up an online data portal where scientists can use several web services to process b io dive rsity data (h ttp ://life w a tch .b e /d a ta -se rvice s ).These web services assist in data standardization, q u a lity control, visualization, analysis and retrieval o f additional data.
