To realize self-adaption of positioning precision in the next generation communication systems, this paper analyzes the theory of cognitive positioning in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, MIMOCPS. First, this paper computes the theoretical value of time-of-arrival (TOA) by using Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) criterion. Second, this paper derives the maximum likelihood (ML) algorithm for precision self-adaption in MIMO-CPS. Third, this paper derives two-step time-delay estimation algorithm involved in MIMO-CPS. The algorithm can reduce computation complexity for TOA estimation. Last, simulation results show that the positioning precision in MIMO performs better than the single-input multiple-output (SIMO) and single-input single-output (SISO) conditions. Furthermore, the positioning precision of our two-step algorithm is much close to CRLB when the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is in a high level.
