Although traditional testing technology can be applied in object-oriented software development, object-oriented software is structured differently from traditional software and thus requires new solutions. The first part of the solution tests class-based production software with class-based unit tests. T^e second part of the solution takes advantage of state-based testing techniques where applicable. State-based testing methodology, developed at University of Durham, England focuses on the communication of an object's operations via its state. Mar cam Corporation is developing large object-oriented products (>1000 C++ classes) for the process manufacturing industry and requires a commercially viable and theoretically sound testing technology. This paper describes efforts at Mar cam Corporation to produce a class-based testing technology taking advantage of statebased techniques.
