Divertimento for Band, Opus 42 by Vincent Persichetti: An analysis of musical energies and interpretive strategies for the conductor

Robert A. Shetland · ProQuest Demo Repository · 2009

The purpose of this study is to provide conductors with a critical analysis of the Divertimento for Band, Op.42 by Vincent Ludwig Persichetti (1915-1987), as well as offer them a specific interpretive model for rehearsal and performance The Divertimento was written in the summer of 1949 while the composer was living in El Dorado, Kansas, and was originally conceived as an orchestral work. In addition to an analysis of the score, a discussion of the rehearsal and performance concept of musical energies is included; this concept is unique to the wind studies program at California State University, Long Beach. This method, which began to be utilized in 1969 with the appointment of Professor Larry Curtis as Director of Bands, provides the conductor with specific techniques for creating expression in ensemble rehearsals and performances, which may be applied to any piece of music or type of ensemble.
