An Advanced P_SAD Calculation Algorithm for Fast Mode Decision in H.264/AVC

In this paper, we propose the advanced macroblock (MB) skip mode to decrease the computational complexity of a mode decision. The main concept of this proposed algorithm optionally decides the applying of the Mode Processing (SMP) or Not Skip Mode Processing (NSMP) by using the threshold value. And measurement value is defined by a statistical analysis of the spatial-temporal characteristics between the rate-distortion (RD) cost function and the P_SAD. If the measurement value is less than the threshold value by calculating RD cost, then it processes the SMP, otherwise it processes the NSMP. The proposed algorithm achieved the computational saving of 25~30% in total computational complexity without any percieable coding loss and additional operations.
