A CARTOGRAPHIC METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE DENSITY OF THE WORLD'S TRANSPORT NETWORKS

Z. V. Samoylenko, Tatiana Nokelaynen, Ye. A. Prokhorova · Mapping Sciences & Remote Sensing · 1990

A method of compiling global-scale maps of transportation density is outlined, which relies on the use of larger-scale general reference and transportation maps as basic information sources rather than on density statistics averaged by entire countries. It is based on the calculation of mean composite density values (for a number of modes) for cells of a grid and the plotting of isarithms of equal transport density via interpolation. A world map prepared using this method is compared with one based on statistical data averaged for entire countries. Translated from: Geodeziya i kartografiya, 1989, No. 8, pp. 33–36.
