This study is in the area of automatic query expansion - automatically expanding query terms with related terms for the purpose of improving retrieval effectiveness. The most common approach to automatic query expansion is to expand each query term with statistically co-occuring terms - terms that tend to co-occur in the same document as the query term but it has met with little success.
