Recent theoretical findings suggest that at low frequencies the stability of the perceived location of a virtual sound source reproduced by a loudspeaker system can be estimated from the acoustic impedance of the reproduced sound field at the listener location. This theory is briefly reviewed in this paper. A technique is then proposed by which a microphone array is used to estimate the acoustic impedance of the field at a given location and the theory used to evaluate the robustness of the perceived position of a virtual source.
