The emerging grid technologies allow knowledge sharing. When two or more grid sites interact with each other, not only resources need to be interconnected but also the semantics that underline the context, meaning, and structure of the resources. The semantic grid deals with the mechanism to allow this exchange of semantic information. Semantic grid uses ontology to describe sharable conceptualization of specific domain of interest in a machine-understandable format. Realizing semantic grids raises a number of challenges. As in a grid environment whereby each site can be autonomous and maintain its own ontology, maintaining consistency of ontology in a grid environment, particularly how to deal with incremental update and version, is a challenge. In our previous work, we worked on optimization scheme of ontology using a parallel mechanism. However, further work on how parallel optimization can be used in semantic grid requires distinctive attention. In this paper, we investigate techniques to maintain and distribute ontology in semantic grid, which is a critical element in promoting the use of ontology for knowledge sharing in a grid environment, and to minimize communication overhead through the use materialized ontology in versioning and incremental update.
