SSB generation using complex digital filters

Complex signals occur naturally in communication systems. It follows naturally that the digital filters used in the system can also be complex. This paper first presents a discussion on single-sideband (SSB) generation using complex digital filtering techniques and demonstrates the possible cost savings which can be achieved. Subsequently, three second-order complex filter structures are presented; these are the direct form, minimum norm and optimal state space filters. Furthermore, the nonlinear characteristics of these filters are shown to be identical to their corresponding real filters.
