A Hybrid Architecture for a User-Adapted Training System

M Papagni, Cirillo, Alessandro Micarelli · 1997

1 The Computer Assisted Training (CBT) systems can play a crucial role for a fast training at low cost. In this paper we present a case-based system for training and educational applications. The system, under development in JAVA^TM, can plan lessons independently from the application domain. The system contains a User Modeling module, capable of building a representation of the user objectives and characteristics, that allows the system to personalise the teaching interaction. A distinguishing feature of the User Modeling module is the use of a hybrid approach, in which case-based components and an artificial neural network are integrated in a certain manner into one coherent system so that each component performs the tasks for which it is best suited. The system has been applied for a training course in the domain of "Project Management of Information Systems". The Training module plans lessons from its own experience which are indexed with a discrimination network and are retrieved ...
