This paper reviews the evolution of process simulation in conjunction with the evolution of computer hardware and software technologies from a chemical engineering perspective. Interactions between user requirements for process design, perspective shifts from emergent computer languages and operating systems and communication systems are analysed. At the end of this paper, a tentative outlook on the development of process simulation and its interaction with the chemical engineering practice is presented.
