Architecture Patterns and Principles

Tim Weilkiens, Jesko G. Lamm, Stephan Volkher Roth, Markus Walker · 2015

Patterns are good tools to make the implicit knowledge of the system architect explicit. Patterns and principles are documented best practices and proven experiences of system architects. The pattern is described as part of the SYSMOD methodology. It describes the relationship between requirements and architectures on different abstraction levels. The zigzag pattern is independent of SysML or any other requirements and architecture modeling languages or methodologies. It is a generic pattern that describes the relationship between requirements and architectural elements across abstraction levels. The zigzag pattern shows that the architecture decisions that are the input of the engineering project are described in the architecture one level above the top-level requirements. The software engineering discipline is the origin of the cohesion and coupling principle. SysML follows the principle of the separation of definition, usage and runtime aspects. Heuristics are an important tool for the system architect.
