The major difference of GCC 4.x against GCC 3.x is using Tree-SSA instead of RTL. Through the highlevel attributes of Tree-SSA, GCC 4.x achieved more advanced optimization schemes than GCC 3.x. But, there still remain some disputes on the pros and cons. In this paper, we evaluate the effect of Tree-SSA to the performance of GCC 4.x on EISC architecture with EEMBC benchmarks. This analysis is performed by comparing two performance factors; the number of dynamic instructions and compiled code size in GCC 3.4.5 and GCC 4.2.2. First, we discuss the reason why we get some performance degradation in some benchmarks while we achieve about 10% performance improvement on average with GCC 4.2.2 against GCC 3.4.5. Second, we discuss about the increment of compiled code size due to some enhanced optimizations in GCC 4.2.2. Finally, we propose the better usage of GCC 4.2.2 on EISC architecture.
