Medical Image Registration Measures

In this chapter, we introduce intensity-based registration methods used in medical imaging as special instances of a more general feature-based statistical registration framework. Several commonly used registration measures are discussed within this framework and related to underlying assumptions regarding the statistical distribution of matched voxel intensity pairs, enabling us to make prescriptions as to the choice of a measure in a particular registration problem (e.g., monomodal vs multimodal). We further discuss classes of spatial transformations appropriate for three-dimensional medical image registration, with a special emphasis on diffeomorphic transformations to model large topology-preserving deformations.
