The case for custom computation
J.P. Gray, Tom Kean · 1991
The paper describes a general purpose custom computer and the architectural styles supported by it. They use a 2*4 array of CAL1024 parts to form the CHS2*4 board. The paper seeks to make the argument that custom computers represent a fundamental innovation in computer architecture by supporting an alternative paradigm for computation, the configurable hardware paradigm, within a general purpose reprogrammable machine. This paradigm combines the performance benefits of implementing algorithms in hardwired logic with the cost benefits of reusable standard parts based products. >
