The author assesses the work being carried out in the field of artificial intelligence and argues that we are a long way from true machine intelligence. He feels that the aims of AI research are often misunderstood and explains that most of the effort is directed toward extending the capabilities of machines to make them more useful tools, not toward making ersatz human minds.
