Considerable research effort has recently been concentrated in the use of adaptive notch filtering for the retrieval, or elimination, of sinusoids imbedded in noise (Rao and Kung, 1984, Nehorai, 1985, Ng, 1987, Friedlander and Smith, 1984 and Glover, 1977). An implementation of the notch filter, using a constrained infinite impulse response (IIR) structure has been proposed by Rao and Kung, 1984 which uses 2n parameters, where n is the number of notches. This filter was further optimised by Nehorai (1985) and Ng (1987) who developed a design which uses only n parameters. The reduction in the number of parameters has many implications including reduction in computational effort, increase in convergence rate and better tracking capabilities. In all of the above contributions, the model structure of the notch filter was that of an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) process. Hence, the single output from the notch filter is used (by the adaptive algorithm) to adjust all of the filter parameters simultaneously.
