Recently new Distributed Maximum Power Point Tracking (DMPPT) architectures have been released and launched to the market as an alternative to traditional MPPT configurations. These innovative solutions, based on a DC-DC converter for every single PV panel, have been specially designed to optimize the performance of heterogeneous PV systems, such as those integrated in buildings. Ideally, they can solve any mismatching problem, but actually this is not always feasible. This paper analyzes the performance of this kind of architectures in order to demonstrate that they fail under certain working conditions, depending on the operating range of employed DC-DC converters and the voltage at the input of the PV inverter.
