Our paper concerns dictionary writing systems (DWS), i.e. softwarefor writing and producing dictionaries. We discuss some necessaryfeatures of a DWS and the use of different DWSs in Sweden and, tosome extent, also internationally. Given that DWSs are expensiveto develop and maintain, the DWS situation in Swedish publishinghouses is rather unsatisfactory. More efficient tailor-made systemshave been developed at academic lexicographic institutes in Sweden.One such system is Cronoma, a DWS used to compile LexinSvenska ord (Lexin Swedish words) in the Lexin project at the Centrefor Lexicology and Lexicography at the University of Gothenburg.Cronoma has been developed in close co-operation between lexicographersand systems engineers. It is considered easy to use and willsoon be available as a free resource.
