Computer Applications in Geology, No.4, Chapter 16: Integrated Geo-Systems--A Computational Environment for Integrated Management, Analysis, and Presentation of Petroleum Industry Data

Khalid Amin Khan · 2000

Petroleum exploration and production (E&P) involve complex techniques for processing, analyzing, and interpreting large volumes of diverse data. To get the most out of this data resource, it is necessary to use effective data management tools for integrated analysis. This paper presents an integrated approach in which geographic information systems (GIS) technology plays a central role, along with other technologies, in integrated management, analysis, and presentation of various types of E&P data sets. A GIS provides a visual front-end as an intuitive user interface that interacts with the array of databases for data extraction. The GIS is supported by powerful graphical tools for integrated display of results from various methods that complement each other, thereby presenting a variety of complex information using simple visualization models. GIS architecture is linked with an increasing amount of geoscience application software through its common data formats for displaying their computed results.
