Highly efficient hardware implementations of DCT are possible by exploiting the computational redundancy. Even better results can be achieved for the applications where DCT is followed by quantization. This paper demonstrates the use of a novel approach to optimize the look-up-table based implementation of DCT. This work uses 2D 8×8 DCT, a basic element in many image compression applications, as a specimen for analysis. The results are compared for different values of data widths and address bits sizes, in terms of quality of the reconstructed images and area of the implemented designs.
