A basic low-level discriminator is described in which a diode is connected to the plate circuit of the first amplifier tube of a Schmidt-type discriminator circuit. The circuit equations are discussed for this basic type of circuit. Three variations on this type of circuit were studied and the linearity of each variant is given. The optimum choice of passive circuit elements that yields the most favorable linearity curve is given for each variant. Two different types of amplifier tubes were evaluated. The best circuit yielded very good linearity in the range of 2 to 160 mv pulse height of the input signal. The maximum count rate for this circuit does not exceed 10,000 per second. The raising of this count-rate limit is the subject of further investigation. (TTT)
