Multimedia traffic in new generation networks: requirements, control and modeling
Zoran S. Bojkovic, Bojan M. Bakmaz, Miodrag R. Bakmaz · International Conference on Communications · 2009
This work deals with multimedia traffic in New Generation Networks (NGNs). The emphasis is on requirements, control and modeling. Throughout the past decade, new multimedia applications emerged, establishing a trend of significant increase in traffic volume. The target of NGNs is to provide Quality of Service (QoS) assurance for demands emerging from different applications of nomadic users with any mobility pattern. Advanced optimized resource management must be adopted to allow each user to be connected to the preferred access network at any instant. The adoption of the Internet Protocol (IP) for mobile environment and extension of packet-based services to the radio interface calls for advanced congestion control and traffic modeling efforts. After an introduction discussion including multimedia traffic management techniques, the issues concerning the user requirements and QoS support in NGNs are outlined. Finally, multimedia traffic modeling, together with aspects for NGNs scenario is analyzed.
