In the world of seismic data acquisition, processing and interpretation, data storage technology has been a burden. Computing muscle and processing speeds have made a quantum leap forward, providing breakthroughs in seismic processing volume and throughput. The remaining obstacle to efficiently exploiting these latest system advances was inadequate mass storage. The industry relies primarily on technologies now considered inefficient. Because of such systems` low storage density and data transfer rates, users face an input/output (I/O) bottleneck; and the efficiency and throughput of operations are compromised. However, Ampex DST tape drives and libraries could eliminate many existing storage problems. The DST 310 is a high-speed, high-capacity DD-2 format tape drive designed for a wide range of geophysical applications. It can accommodate three different cartridge sizes with capacities 25, 75 or 165 Gbytes. This paper reviews the design and performance of these storage devices.
