In this paper we derive a set of formulae for the design of two-dimensional (2-D) FIR digital filters. Least-square formulation of the design problem results in a number of matrices with some very useful properties. These properties are exploited to find an explicit functional relation between the frequency response and the filter coefficients. A matrix called inverse frequency response transform matrix is developed, which when operated on the specified frequency response gives the filter coefficients directly. Although the derivation of the design formulae are somewhat involved, their application in the filter design is very simple. The design does not employ any optimization technique thereby resulting in greatly reduced computational complexity. The proposed technique compares well with other known techniques both in terms of design time and error in approximation.
