Model Driven Approaches to Cross Platform Mobile Development

Lamia Gaouar, Abdelkrim Benamar, Fethi Tarik Bendimerad · 2015

The mobile market is composed of several mobile platforms (Android, iOS, WP...), each offers its own SDK and requires specific capabilities. With the existing incompatibility between platforms, developing applications for several platforms, separately, is becoming increasingly difficult and need considerable resources. To solve that, cross platform mobile development solutions have been investigated. These solutions are divided into five categories based on the implementation technology on which they are built: web approach, hybrid approach, interpreted approach, cross-platform approach and model driven approach. This paper focuses specifically on the model driven approaches. Our aim is to show the potential of the model driven approaches to increase development productivity and to improve application quality by describing a solution in high-level of abstractions and using models to generate the common aspects of applications. To do so, we try to provide a global description of the actual state of this area.
