Software testing is the most promising way of assuring a high quality software product. Software testing cannot ensure that the product is 100% bug free but it can always minimize the occurrence of the number of defects, which helps in achieving a quality product. The main objective of the paper is to analyze the testing activities of the organizations in Pakistan, to identify problems, constraints and misconceptions in adapting software testing. The six most important software testing best practices using theoretical research were identified; and then based on these practices a quantitative questionnaire was designed to study the extent to which organizations are carrying out testing activities. The survey findings revealed that there was a big gap between the software testing skills required by the industry and the practical knowledge of the software engineering students. With the help of the survey it can be concluded that software testing syllabus should revised.
