In order to transmit video sequence over communication networks, video coding is required to compress a huge size of data to be as small as possible. This can be achieved by eliminating most redundancies contained within the original video sequence. Most popular techniques apply transform based coding in their compression processes. This paper proposes a method used to increase the compression ratio of the block-based video coding scheme. VLC coding process is modified in such a way that it gives a shorter codeword and at the same time minimizes the coding errors. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieved the slightly different quality, which is hardly notice by human eye, of the existing method with less amounts of bits used in the compressed data. Moreover, the proposed method can be applied to any block-based video coding schemes.
