An Overview of Compiler-integrated Testing

Traditionally, compilers available to the software developer/tester have supported a few simple testing techniques, namely, statement and branch coverage. However, during compilation, sufficient syntactic and semantic information is available to provide support for more sophisticated testing techniques. This paper presents an overview of a novel method to efficiently support white-box testing techniques via information and code generated at compile-time. Examples of appropriate candidate techniques include program mutation and data flow testing. In addition, it shows promise in providing support for other software development/maintenance activities such as debugging, incremental program modification, and profiling.
