Towards Personalised Pharmacotherapy: A Perspective from Biomedical Informatics

Frank P. Y. Lin · 2009

Individualised drug therapy is speculated to improve treatment outcomes. With better understanding of basic and clinical sciences, however, we are still faced with challenges in achieving more sophisticated diagnostics, efficient drug design, better pharmacogenomic applications, and safer drug administrations - all of which are important in governing successful personalisation. Biomedical informatics may support the individualisation efforts by offering assistance in biomarker discovery, in silico hypotheses generation, therapy optimisation by computational and statistical modelling, and safer clinical information systems. Information frameworks supporting translational medicine, electronic health records, and decision support systems are key aspects in achieving these goals.
