Parts: A Component Architecture for a Customisable Embedded Product

P Burgess · 1999

Software components are becoming an increasingly popular tool for developers of PC applications. They provide flexibility, extendibility, distribution, testability and facilitate software re-use. As these were among the goals of our new embedded access controller device, we have developed our own component architecture which we call parts. The motivation for parts was to provide PLC-like functionality in software, that is a library of parameterized software components that can be 'wired' together in different ways to achieve different functionality without the need to produce multiple versions of the embedded system software. Our goal is also to be able to supply specialized components to customers with specific requirements rather than a complete customized system.
