A Catalog of Modeling Formalisms for Domain-Specific Modeling Languages Design
Sérgio Martins Fernandes, Selma Shin Shimizu Melnikoff · 2012
In a blunt assessment, model-driven development (MDD) failed to capture broad interest of the software engineering community, more than ten years after first being proposed. It doesn’t mean that this approach is dead – at least not yet. For MDD to succeed, a lot of research needs to be done, to simplify the MDD process and make it more a technique and less art. This research is happening, in many different aspects of MDD. This paper focuses on one relevant aspect of the research regarding MDD: the definition of a catalog of modeling formalisms that may be used as models of computation for a broad range of domain-specific modeling languages (DSMLs), so that the design of DSMLs (in the context of an MDD process) doesn’t need to be created from scratch, but created instead from basic building blocks.
