A Comparative Study of the Error Performance of Multiple Error Correcting Coding Schemes – Sum Codes and Multiplication Codes

P. Sri Hari · SSRN Electronic Journal · 2015

Channel coding is used to facilitate reliable transmission over the communication channel which introduces redundancy. In an (n, k) binary linear block code, a block of k message bits are encoded into a block of n code bits, where each k bit message word is appended with r = n – k number of parity bits. The parity bits are obtained as the linear combination of message bits according to the prescribed mathematical rule. The number of useful bits, among the number of bits transmitted, decides the efficiency of the code. The code efficiency or code rate of an (n, k) block code is given by (k/n) = 100%, which is always less than 100%. This paper proposes a group of codes that are capable of correcting random errors and burst errors (Man, 1989).
