Programmable Logic Arrays Reduce Chip Counts in Computer Systems

SD Besford, C Moloney · 1981

The use of logic arrays to reduce the random logic in many computer or controller systems is a field of much interest today. This paper discusses the use of Field Programmable Logic Arrays (FPLAs) and Field Programmable Read Only Memorys (FPROMs). Descriptions of what they are, how they define logic and then how they are programmed, culminate in a design example for a 6809 microprocessor board which replaces up to 4 similar sized cards. The use of FPLAs and FPROMs in prototyping offers several advantages apart from reduction in board complexity such as the ability to alter logic functions without the need for extensive board level redesign, easier prototyping, speed advantages and improvement in design security.
