Information technology : a case for its inclusion in the advanced training of development practitioners

Notwithstanding the inconclusive debate about the impact of the digital divide on advancing poverty, social and economic cleavages and the practice of development, the emphasis on information technology as a focus is increasingly being incorporated into the vision of major international development agencies. Furthermore, development students, in the current analysis, despite their limited knowledge of information technology, are attracted to development courses that incorporate a component of information technology and communication (ITC) training. They also identify a number of positive features as to why it should be included in a development studies curriculum. These are outlined in the context of their application to current development practices.
